The First Thanksgiving, reproduction of an oil painting by J.L.G. Ferris, early 20th century.
"Barukh attah, Adonai Eloheynu, Melekh-ha'olam, haMotzi lechem min ha'aretz" ("Praised be you, Adonai our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth"
A "b'rakhah" in Hebrew is a blessing said before meals. This word is often translated into "give thanks" or "bless" in English language Bibles. So, in most instances, where the Bible says "He gave thanks" or "He blessed them", it literally means that the above blessing was said.
Today, we gather together with our loved ones, to celebrate the abundance we have. The first Thanksgiving was in 1621, to celebrate the first successful harvest. It's been almost 400 years since that first Thanksgiving!
I hope you all have a wonderful Holiday and are able to enjoy the day!
